Dallas Cowboys all-pro tight end Jason Witten was back home on Saturday in his hometown of Elizabethton, Tenn., to host his seventh annual Jason Witten’s SCORE Foundation Football Camp. The camp, which is free for kids ages 7-18, is one of the nation’s largest free football camps, with more than 1,200 campers taking part in this year’s event.
Witten, who was joined by several other current and former NFL stars, such as Cowboys teammate Bobby Carpenter and former University of Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer, worked one-on-one with campers and spoke to all of the kids about the importance of education and teamwork.
“This camp is something I take a great deal of pride in,” said Witten, who was a standout at Elizabethton High School in the late 90s and for the Tennessee Volunteers from 2000-2002. “Being able to come back to Tennessee and interact with kids here in the area where I grew up is very exciting for me. It means a lot that so many people want to come out and be a part of this.”
In addition to the camp, Witten also spent Saturday presenting the first two Jason Witten SCORE Foundation Football Camp Scholarships. Two rising high school seniors (one from East Tennessee, and the other from Southwest Virginia) were each chosen to receive $5,000 scholarships to the college of their choice when they graduate next year. Zach Boles, a 17-year old rising senior at Elizabethton (TN) High School, and Nick Robinson, a 17-year old rising senior at Clintwood (VA) High School were presented with the awards by Witten himself at the camp. They were chosen out of 12 nominees from around the region who were nominated for their outstanding work in the classroom, leadership ability and overall character.
